He began his career training as a carpenter in light timber-framed construction, which led to 10 years of carpentry and building experience. This included solid wood cabinetmaking, boatbuilding and culminated in operating his own construction company for several years.

Tom then studied architectural design at the Unitec School of Architecture in Auckland and graduated with a Bachelor of Architectural Studies and Senior Scholar Award in 2014. Since then, Tom has worked for respected architectural firms Scarlet Architects and Bossley Architects, where he learned from acclaimed architect Pete Bossley. Tom has been involved in a variety of projects ranging from residential to commercial, urban to rural, and small to large scale.
